2.2 million Houstonians have more control over their energy use
CenterPoint Energy has completed the installation of more than 2.2 million Itron smart meters. Smart meters are part of CenterPoint Energy’s smart grid initiative, designed to give consumers more control over their energy consumption while improving electric reliability and power restoration.
Smart meters virtually eliminate manual meter reading, giving consumers more privacy. By automating routine service transactions to remotely connect and disconnect service, CenterPoint Energy has avoided more than 3.5 million truck rolls, or service visits by field service representatives, since August 2009. Starting or stopping service, or changing Retail Electric Providers is now easier, faster, and cheaper for consumers.
In addition, Houston-area consumers now have access to their energy data at SmartMeterTexas.com or using in-home devices (IHDs) that display data provided by the home’s smart meter. Biggest Energy Saver 2011 contest winner Mike Butler used his IHD and the Smart Meter Texas portal to track his electric usage and was able to reduce his consumption by 36 percent.
“Using the tools at SmartMeterTexas.com was invaluable!,” said Butler. “The comparison charts made it very easy to see the difference in consumption.”
In addition to smart meters, CenterPoint Energy is building a future self-healing intelligent grid that will use smart meters, power line sensors, remote switches and other automated equipment to improve power reliability and restoration in central Houston.
