St. Louis Community College

Lineman Employment Training

Abstract

St. Louis Community College (STLCC), and partner AmerenUE, will recruit and train linemen in the Greater St. Louis region for high-tech jobs in the electric power industry. AmerenUE will train 90 displaced workers in a five-week, 200-hour pre-employment training program. AmerenUE will select 60 of these individuals to participate in its own internal screening and selection process and will place 45 in the lineman apprenticeship program. Training will include pole climbing, technical reading, math, and physical conditioning. Past experience has shown that candidates have found pole climbing particularly difficult. STLCC and AmerenUE will help mitigate that difficulty by installing a practice pole yard. STLCC will use retired lineman as trainers to give students real-world experience.
