Increasing Energy Literacy
Power Over Energy is an energy literacy campaign created by a coalition of energy and environmental groups to engage the public and give consumers the information they need to begin to take control of their energy usage. Members of the coalition include U.S. Department of Energy and a number of other leading organizations that represent stakeholders from across the energy industry.
Power Over Energy is a successful social media campaign that helps consumers understand how to make smarter decisions when it comes to their electricity consumption. Industry research by the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC) and others find that the average consumer knows little about how electricity is generated, distributed and consumed, the impact of using it, or how to maximize efficiency and cost savings. They also have limited understanding of the challenges that face our existing electricity grid—challenges that, if not addressed, will have a direct negative impact on all consumers and the environment. Power Over Energy engages and encourages consumers to become active, informed participants in the energy discussion.
Facts About Energy Consumption
Here are some energy facts consumers will find on Power Over Energy:
- Video game consoles in the U.S. consume 10 billion kWh of electricity a year, equal to the annual CO2 OUTPUT OF 4 MEDIUM-SIZED POWER PLANTS. Air pollution was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide in 2012.
- Producing bottled water requires 2,000 TIMES MORE ENERGY than producing tap water.
- Well-placed landscape trees can SAVE UP TO 25% of a home’s energy needs. Reducing the need for energy is one way to fight increasing forest fires brought by climate change.
There are many more facts, tips, and resources—including interactive quizzes about electricity generation, consumption, transmission, impact, and efficiency — for consumers on PowerOverEnergy.org.
