This document explains the background, methodology, assumptions, and step-by-step instructions necessary to utilize the ES Computational Tool (ESCT) in the most effective way. The introduction section provides a summary of the Department of Energy (DOE) Smart Grid Demonstration programs, an explanation of the history of the ESCT, and an explanation of the tools purpose and uses. Later sections of this document provide a description of the DOE ES benefit analysis methodology, an overview of the ESCT architecture, and step-by-step instructions for using the ESCT. The appendices provide further detail about the methodology, calculations, and assumptions used in the ESCT.
