Recovery Act Smart Grid Programs

Gathering Information

Recovery Act funding recipients are required to gather information and report it using “build metrics.” Build metrics track program spending and measure progress towards upgrading the electric grid.

Build Metrics: The monetary investments, electricity infrastructure assets, policies and programs, and jobs that are applied in the Recovery Act funded smart grid projects.

The data on this site is compiled from the build metrics reported by individual projects funded through the SGIG and SGDP programs, and includes the private funds provided by the recipients’ cost share. Recipients are required to report build-metrics data quarterly as specified in their individual metrics and benefits reporting plan.

Build metrics address the following key questions:

  • What was purchased, built, and deployed?
  • How much did it cost?
  • Where was it installed?
  • How much of the system was affected?
  • What does it do?
  • How many jobs were created / retained?

Build metrics are grouped according to the type of system in which the asset is used:

  • Advanced Metering Infrastructure
  • Customer Systems
  • Electric Distribution System
  • Electric Transmission Systems

DOE is using build metrics data not only to track the progress of deployments within the program, but also to assess the benefits of implementing smart grid technologies.
