Recovery Act Smart Grid Programs

Technology Deployment Analysis

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is examining the information that is provided by the recipients of Recovery Act Smart Grid funding. Each project required to gather and report information on assets, programs, and systems quarterly to DOE. The deployment data are called “build metrics.” Build metrics track program spending and measure progress towards modernizing the electric grid.

Build Metrics: The monetary investments, electricity infrastructure assets, policies and programs, and jobs that are applied in the Recovery Act funded smart grid projects.

Build metrics data is compiled from reports to DOE from project recipients participating in the SGIG and SGDP programs, and includes both SGIG funds and private, cost-shared funds provided by the recipients. Recipients are required to report build-metrics data quarterly and for the data elemetns specified in their individual metrics and benefits reporting plans.

Technology deployment analysis of the build metrics address the following key questions:

  • What was purchased, built, and deployed?
  • How much did it cost?
  • Where was it installed?
  • How much of the system was affected?
  • What does it do?
  • How many jobs were created/retained?

Technology deployment analysis of build metrics are grouped according to the type of system in which the assets used:

  • Advanced Metering Infrastructure
  • Customer Systems
  • Electric Distribution Systems
  • Electric Transmission Systems

DOE will provide reports based on the analyses performed in 2012 and 2013. Reports will be published here as they become available.
