A meter that records a customer's electricity usage for time intervals of one hour or less, and can transmit that information to the utility without the need for a human meter reader. Depending on the feature set, the meter may also notify the utility of a power outage, provide pricing or other information to the customer, or allow the utility to remotely switch electricity service on or off.
