This paper explores the increased participation from consumers in the U.S. power distribution grid due to the Smart Grid, the potential size of this new community, and its member's extensive experience with the public Internet, and compares this new community to an analysis of the evolution and current state of the Internet as a predictor for best practices in the architectural design of certain portions of the Smart Grid network.
